The Best Way To Reduce Stress

There are certain words or topics that hit a chord with people and become so commonly referred to that we use them to cover a wide variety of things.

Stress has become one of those topics. I doubt that any of us could go through a day in a modern civilisation without encountering stress ourselves or seeing someone else, in person or in the media, who declares the need to reduce stress.

I typed in stress at google.com and it returned 253 million pages. Stress management found 19 and a half million pages.

Of all the wild and wonderful possible ways of reducing stress that these millions of pages include, I believe one approach to overcoming stress is more powerful, more effective and more worthy of your time and attention.

It is the proactive strategy of determining to live your life without conflict.

To do so does not mean that you won't ever encounter conflict. It just means you won't tolerate it hanging around in your experience. You deal with it and move on as quickly as you can.

In this page I will explain why I believe this strategy the most effective reduce stress method ever.

It is Practical. It doesn't require you to lie down for twenty minutes. You can use it anywhere. And actually when you do use it more often, it cuts stress off at it's source.

The Top Five Reasons Why Living Without Conflict is the Best Reduce Stress Method

  1. It deals with life rather than putting it on hold while you regain your balance.

Most methods to manage or reduce stress treat the feelings tha result from stress. Meditation, breathing exercises, massages and such like methods focus on taking you away from the stressful situation and then calming you down into a more tranquil state where you can rebalance.

This approach is great when you are stressed, it gets you back into a state of mind where you can get some perspective and deal with things effectively.

However it's much like taking an aspirin or putting on a plaster. It's a temporary measure to address the symptoms of stress. And the approach assumes that you are helpless to deal with the situations that caused your stress without getting all tensed up.
  2. It reduces negative emotions.

Negative emotion comes from the clashing of 2 or more beliefs.

It might be I believe this would make me happy, but I don't believe I can ever achieve it.

Or I believe I need to be in 2 places at the same time, but I can't physically achieve it.

Or I believe I want to be a great Mum, but I also believe I want to do well in my career and I don't believe I can achieve both without one suffering.

Or I believe I have to do all these things and I don't believe I have enough time to do them in.

We continually produce these contradictory believes and so we continually create negative emotion. But look at what happens when the problem is eventually resolved, one of the beliefs is found not to be true.

Maybe we really don't want one goal as much as the other. Or perhaps the thing we believe prevents us from achieving something can be overcome or avoided.

By dealing head on with these issues we reduce the negative emotions in our lives much faster and more effectively.
  3. It stops problems festering and snowballing leading to a downward spiral of negative emotions.

Dealing with problems and negative emotions as they happen means that you are keeping on top of things. It's like clearing your desk of work. You are ready and capable to tackle the next exciting project rather than having to turn down interesting projects because you have to clear the backlog which you no longer have any interest in.

While you are dealing with one problem your ability to focus on incoming situations is diminished. As a result, all the stuff that you are dealing with without your full awareness and attention are the foundations for tomorrow's problems.

So one problem leads to many problems until you are snowed under and the situation seems so overwhelming that it seems you just can't cope with all that is bombarding you.

To add to your woes there is an interlinked dynamic that worsens the situation. You see, while you are feeling stressed, angry, depressed or whatever you feel, you look out into the world through these lens.

So someone across the room is laughing. If you are happy and feeling good you will pay little or no attention to it. But if you are feeling anxious and self conscious, you may interpret that they are laughing at you.

If someone cuts you up in the car, you will react much more aggressively if you feel stressed or angry than you would in a more positive emotional state.

As a result the longer you stay in a negative emotional state, the worse you will react to situations and the more you will overlook opportunities. Therefore, the more new problems you will create for yourself.

Say for example, you are feeling resentful at your boss for some reason. The Christmas party comes around and you decide to drown your sorrows about the latest injustice. Many drinks later it seems perfectly rational to tell your Boss in front of the entire party what you think of her. And to then share her indiscretions on a conference last year with her husband.

Once you've sobered up you realise that you have a big problem. But the big problem was built upon the foundations of the smaller problem.

And had you dealt with the smaller problems quicker and more effectively, you wouldn't have the big problem to deal with.
  4. Not only does it prevent problems, but it increases your productivity and your ability to deal with bigger tasks.

A mind filled with problems is a mind with diffused attention.

Studies have shown that people can perform intelligence tests to a higher standard whilst stoned than they can with diffused attention (in this case doing the test, whilst also answering emails).

Working on one task whilst worrying about something else is asking your brain to split it's power. It can be done, but you have limited your potential productivity.

Stress and worry demand your attention and distract your focus. And lack of focus is the brake upon your mental ability.

To keep your mind clear and in a position where it can focus is to maximise it's power and your productivity.

As an added bonus, the more mental power you have available the more capable you are with dealing with situations and so the less problems you will experience.
  5. It increases the quality of your life.

The more mental horsepower you have available, the quicker you can complete tasks and the bigger tasks you can tackle. As a result you could conceivably cover the ground in a year that a stressed and ineffective person might in three years.

In other words you have increased the velocity of your life experience. By which I mean that you have more interactions, more experiences and generally get through more of life than you otherwise would. So even if the lowered stress did not add to years to your life, you would have packed more into your life experience.
